Charming Hotel: Le Pigonnet, a Gem in the Heart of Aix-en-Provence
A weekend celebrating light and art in a private garden
In Aix-en-Provence, there are places that seem to have always been there; houses that have stood the test of time without ever losing their soul. Le Pigonnet is one of them. Just a few minutes from the Cours Mirabeau, behind its unassuming gates and century-old gardens, this iconic establishment celebrates a century of hospitality. A story that began in 1924 when Fernand and Blanche Swellen transformed a simple four-room inn in the 1960s into one of the most charming homes in Provence, a “Folie” like a hamlet of artists and writers.

A haven for artists
Le Pigonnet is not just a hotel. It is a haven for artists, a garden of inspiration, and a peaceful retreat in the heart of Aix-en-Provence. Here, Jean-Jacques Goldman composed several songs, Serge Gainsbourg and Barbara found the silence conducive to creativity, while generations of writers, musicians, and travelers have been captivated by the unique atmosphere of the place.

One big family
But the story of Le Pigonnet is, above all, a story of loyalty—that of employees who embody the living memory of the restaurant. Take Benjamin Bource, for example, who joined in 1992 as a head waiter and has since become an ambassador for this Aix institution. Or Chef Thierry Balligand, who has been with the restaurant for over thirty years, and whose cuisine continues to celebrate the seasons of Provence with precision and simplicity.

A renaissance orchestrated by Jacques Garcia and Tibaut Picard
Since its takeover by Esprit de France in 2019, Le Pigonnet has been enjoying a new renaissance. The decor of the common areas was redesigned by Jacques Garcia, who used to stay at the hotel as a guest before overseeing its transformation. The designer created cozy lounges, a bar with a cozy charm, and a reception area that blends classic elegance with Provençal flair.
The new suites designed by Thibaut Picard extend this vision with spacious rooms opening onto the gardens. Some feature large private terraces offering soothing views of pine trees, fountains, and rosebeds. The largest suites span nearly 170 m², while the private villas—true family homes at the heart of the estate—offer a unique way to experience Aix.

A wonderful garden
Because the true treasure of Le Pigonnet lies outdoors.
In this 2-hectare garden, right in the heart of the city, more than a hundred plant species create a living landscape dotted with fountains, ponds, and shaded paths. Here, cicadas fill the summer afternoons, marriage proposals are whispered beneath the rose garden, and every turn seems to invite contemplation.

Cézanne and Mount Sainte-Victoire
Local legend has it that Paul Cézanne found in these gardens one of his favorite vantage points for viewing Mont Sainte-Victoire. Whether historical or poetic, the painter’s presence still seems to linger here. Amid the shifting light filtering through the trees, the garden’s vistas, and the colors of Provence, the connection to the work of the master from Aix feels natural.
This year, as Aix celebrates Cézanne, Le Pigonnet stands out more than ever as one of the best starting points for exploring the city and its heritage.

La Table du Pigonnet
At the table, this same connection to the region is reflected on the plate. Chef Thierry Balligand prioritizes local producers and seasonal ingredients in his generous yet refined Mediterranean cuisine, while pastry chef Romain Marti delights diners with delicious, unexpected desserts.
This approach extends to “Les Amis,” a new gourmet offering designed around sharing and conviviality, to be enjoyed wherever you like on the estate.
The Rose Bar is also worth a visit. Behind its decor designed by Jacques Garcia, Pierre, the head bartender, crafts creations inspired by Provence. Among them are a surprising saffron pastis, the Spigol, and cocktails infused with fresh basil, seasonal strawberries, or wildflowers that grow at the foot of Sainte-Victoire.

The Spa: A Green Oasis
Another major new feature: Folie Verte, the 400-square-meter spa designed by Marion Mailaender. Recycled wood, natural materials, and the scents of jasmine, lilac, and olive wood come together to create a soothing environment where holistic treatments, massages, and sensory experiences extend the spirit of the garden.
At Le Pigonnet, luxury is expressed neither through ostentation nor showmanship. It lies in the enduring atmosphere, the beauty of a preserved garden, the attention to detail, and the unique light that accompanies every moment.
A rare place where guests come as much to stay as to rediscover the spirit of an artistic and luminous Provence that continues to inspire.
