In Nancy, a literary hotel dedicated to Stendhal
Just a hundred meters from Place Stanislas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Hôtel Littéraire Stendhal seems to blend seamlessly into the backdrop of Nancy Cathedral.

In red and black (but not only)
Housed in an elegant 17th-century building, the former palace of the Primate of Lorraine, this four-star hotel carries forward the founding vision of the Société des Hôtels Littéraires: to create a dialogue between a literary work and a city, and to make a writer a true travel companion. It is in this “most Latin of Eastern cities” that part of Lucien Leuwen, an unfinished novel yet central to Stendhal’s oeuvre, unfolds.
The hotel’s 41 rooms are arranged as a journey of discovery, guided by Stendhal’s motto, which runs through the entire experience like a common thread: “Visse, Scrisse, Amò” (he lived, he wrote, he loved).
On the first floor, the writer’s life is recounted through his early years, his diaries, and his defining passions. On the second floor, the Italy he loved so dearly is reflected in the materials, colors, and references, from Milan to Florence. On the third floor, the spotlight is on the novelist and his legendary heroes: Julien Sorel, Fabrice del Dongo, and La Sanseverina—figures from a literature enamored with freedom.
The interior design, by Aleth Prime, blends Italian influences with a Napoleonic flair in a contemporary setting featuring warm tones: marble, dark wood, marmorino, ochres, and olive greens create a cozy atmosphere, punctuated by manuscripts, engravings, and carefully selected quotations. The multilingual libraries, housing over 500 volumes, sit alongside display cases showcasing manuscripts, letters, and first editions painstakingly collected by Jacques Letertre, giving the hotel the feel of a literary cabinet of curiosities.
The Le Rouge et le Noir spa, a true sensory nod to Stendhal’s masterpiece, draws inspiration from Italian palaces. Hammam, balneotherapy, sensory showers, and massages also invite you to escape…it’s up to you to write your own story there.
