Mas Re.Source, the perfect place to relax in the Gard region
In the Cèze valley, this guest house between Ardèche, Alpilles and Cévennes is a restful, rejuvenating retreat. Newly inaugurated, it's nestled in the heart of a little-known region that's full of must-see sites. And there's no need to spend all day wandering: Mas Re.Source has everything you need to put down roots, with a lovely blend of epicureanism, serenity and special moments of sharing.
A place where art, gastronomy, relaxation and nature come together
The spirit of Mas Re.Source is clear: enjoy life, its pleasures of all kinds, and let the time go by as you choose, strolling or dynamic. The guest house opens its doors this April with the concept of combining its raw, wild environment with works of art; the creators of this captivating place have been collectors of contemporary art for thirty years. A personal, family-style table d'hôte completes the picture, ensuring a harmonious, sensory experience in this characteristically luminous setting on the border between Provence and the mountains.
A harmonious blend of local tradition and modernity
From the outside, Mas Re.Source skilfully juggles the aesthetic codes of regional heritage. Homemade restanques invariably surround the property and gardens. The vegetation is just as much a part of it: vineyards, cypresses, holm oaks and lavandin plunge you straight into an atmosphere tinged with southern France and Tuscan Italy. This former coaching inn on the Avignon-Aubenas road seems to blend into the background when viewed from afar, but is a real eye-catcher when approached. The local stonework absorbs and redistributes the sun's rays without restraint. And, of course, the hues seem to be constantly changing. Inside, paradox comes into play: vaulted ceilings and stonework, once again, alternate with comfortable fittings, subtly chosen materials and arty decor.
Charming, knowledgeable and friendly hosts
Marc and Rémy, former Parisians who've been living here for a few years, obviously play the main roles in this rejuvenating score. As different and complementary as they may be, they share their kindness with each other. They welcome guests here, at the mas, like friends. Their knowledge of their adopted region makes it easy for visitors to get around. As for their shared passion for contemporary art - primarily photography - over the last three decades, they can tell you all about it again and again if you're so inclined.
Marc, a former artistic director, is also at the helm of the stoves, distilling healthy and original home cooking using seasonal produce. Rémy, a steward with Air France in his "previous life", has retained a highly professional sense of service, and has brought back in his luggage a few decorative objects scattered here and there around the premises.
Each room has its own personality
Mas Re.Source houses five double rooms in the main house, each with its own private entrance. Different in size (from 22 to 42m2) and configuration, they are distinguished above all by the spirit and universe of the owners. Colors and artistic pieces - design or ornamental - largely shape the ambience, but a central feature also plays a part in the personality of the premises and, indeed, the appearance of each room; in one, the bathroom is incredibly large and cocooning, in another, the bay windows reveal themselves to be disproportionate... There's something for every taste and every expectation. Beyond the central alley, two guest houses complete the range of accommodation on offer. Apart from their exterior construction (one in wood, the other in stone) and the works of art they contain (though always contemporary), they are strictly identical: almost cathedral-like living room, kitchenette, duplex style. The bedroom (upstairs) and bathroom share a sumptuous view of Mont Ventoux. The 50m2 houses can accommodate two people (15 years and over, as for the bedrooms) looking for even more peace and quiet.
A swimming pool facing the Ventoux, a cinema room, a nook for lazing around...
No programs. At Mas Re.Source, you're completely free to do whatever you like, including staying at the estate, to enjoy the surroundings and all the rest and relaxation they have to offer. Away from the room, which can already be magnetic, the 20 x 4 m swimming pool enjoys a panoramic, unobstructed view over vineyards, lavender fields and, in the distance, Mont Ventoux - the Fujiyama as it's affectionately known here. In the rare event of inclement weather, or if you just feel like having some fun, the common room can be used as a cinema, library or games room. For the more "sporty", a petanque court has been built on the edge of the large garden. Finally, scattered around the estate are a host of little nooks and crannies where you can find just the right atmosphere for your day.
A region full of surprising riches
By Marc and Rémy's own admission, the Gard region - the north of the department in particular - remains largely unknown. And yet, on closer inspection, there's no shortage of attractions. We're just an hour's drive from Nîmes and Avignon. No fewer than six of France's most beautiful villages are located within a 35km radius. The nearest, Montclus, on which the farmhouse depends, is just ten minutes away. The Cèze River cradles this medieval gem, nestled in lavender fields. As for Barjac, a "Village de caractère" not even 5km away, it has acquired a reputation for its renowned antique fair (the 100th will take place at Easter 2024). For art lovers and unusual places, there's also the Anselm Kiefer Foundation, where the contemporary German artist creates and exhibits his spectacular installations, in warehouses or in the open air; a stunning visit. In the Ardèche region -Barjac marks the border-waterfalls, gorges and caves (Chauvet is the most famous) provide the spectacle. Last but not least, for all those "short" strolls in the wild environment surrounding the mas, electric bikes can be made available to visitors, ideal for enjoying unspoilt nature. Just like Mas Re.Source.
