Find refuge at Nihi Sumba: a natural paradise in Indonesia near the Sandalwood horses
In the far west of Sumba, far from the crowds of Bali and the excesses of the modern world, NIHI Sumba feels like a wild retreat where nature sets the pace.
Here, the villas are nestled within acres of lush jungle, the sandy beach stretches for over two kilometers, and horses gallop freely along the shore at sunrise.

A paradise for people and horses, SANDALWOOD HORSES, known for their gentle nature
This is undoubtedly one of Indonesia’s most striking sights: the island’s iconic Sandalwood horses leaving the stable to ride the waves before the guests even wake up.
These horses, renowned for their endurance and gentle nature, are the heart and soul of NIHI. We don’t just watch them—we can ride them through villages nestled between the jungle and rice paddies, all while taking a dip with our equine friends.
The hotel also offers unique equestrian experiences: rides from the coast to the hills, galloping through the waves at Coconut Grove, or moments of deep connection with the horse, rooted in the “Wild Wellness” programs that blend movement, mindfulness, and nature.
Between surfing sessions, NIHI reveals its other side: an ultra-intimate retreat featuring 29 oceanfront villas, the legendary surf spot Occy’s Left, and a philosophy that places well-being and community at the heart of the project. The experience is socially conscious, even in its impact: a large portion of the profits is donated to the Sumba Foundation, which works to combat malaria and improve access to water on the island.
Rates start at £1,550 per villa per night (full board, excluding alcohol)
